About “B” (Betty Gorman)

How I came to Leadership & Coaching

As a CEO and Executive Director I learned and benefited from the expertise and passion of board members, peers, members, and my own executive coaches. Through my experience as a Chamber CEO I observed firsthand both the hardships and rewards of small business ownership. I’ve witnessed the challenges brought on by conflicting management styles, misunderstood goals or the business of being busy instead of focusing on what is essential to the success and meaning of the organization.

B Gorman Leadership CoachDuring my tenure with the Muscular Dystrophy Association I watched the stress and in some cases crisis state caused by a devastating diagnosis to the individual and family. I beheld the power of resilience in those who learned how to enhance their natural ability to find hope, positivity and gratefulness in the face of impending disabilities and/or death. I also developed the capacity to sit with discomfort and pain.

As a weekend ski instructor for over 25 years I’ve been a part of hundreds of breakthrough moments of triumph as well as some meltdowns and moments of anguish and fear.

As a leader I learned to listen to employees and watch for the signs of discontent and dwindling performance, as well as how to recognize and motivate for stellar performance. It never ceases to amaze me at how irrepressible and committed a team can be when working in alignment with a leader who empowers them and believes in their personal resourcefulness and creativity. The hundreds of individuals I’ve led through the decades have taught me the value of humility, humor and compassion and it is in part because of them I was led to pursuing coaching, consulting and facilitating as my next chapter.

The fun stuff:

I am grateful for the opportunity to live in Tahoe. We work hard in a gorgeous environment spending time with friends also drawn to the quality of life found by living alongside nature. We enjoy walks to the beach, hikes in the mountains, skiing, SUP, and winding highways on our motorcycles. When we aren’t running our multitude of businesses in Tahoe you may find us traveling down the highway with our trailer (built in mini office) exploring and relaxing with our pets along for the ride.
